Medical Pathology

About

Pathology, which means the study (logos) of disease (pathos), deals with structural and functional changes in cells, tissues and organs. It tries to identify diseases by examining cells, tissues, organs, and body fluids as well as the whole body (autopsy) with morphological, immunological, chemical and molecular methods.

Tissue biopsies, surgical and cytological materials and consultations sent from other departments and clinics, as well as from various hospitals and health institutions, are examined for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in our pathology laboratories. In addition to conventional studies, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and molecular pathology studies are also intensively applied. Frozen section is one of our usual practices when urgent diagnosis is required during the operations.

Education: Medical Faculty students take a pathology course in the second and third years of their 6 (six) years of education and can choose it as an elective internship in the fifth year. The course is given as theoretical and practical application.
Pathology courses are also given in undergraduate programs of Faculty of Dentistry and Faculty of Pharmacy, in undergraduate programs of Nursing and Physiotherapy of the Faculty of Health Sciences and in associate degree programs of Medical Pathology Technician and Podology in Ahmet Erdoğan Vocational School of Health Services.

Specialization in medical pathology for residents is 4 (four) years according to the relevant laws and regulations. During the specialization training process, research assistants first observe fixation, tissue processing, sectioning and staining processes, and frozen sectioning and participate in macroscopy. They are then taken into the routine evaluation program of biopsy and cytology materials. In line with their aptitude for advanced laboratory techniques, they participate in histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology applications. Pathology research assistants also actively participate in article and case presentations, seminars, joint clinicopathological meetings as well as scientific publication studies.  Within the scope of Medical Specialization Training, research assistants from various surgical branches are also assigned to our department for at least one month in line with the rotation programs.
