Department of Medical Genetics was opened on 29.01.2004 within the body of Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University, Faculty of Medicine. With the opening of the molecular genetics laboratory on May 2004, studies for diagnosis and research were initiated. Our department continues to work with three faculty members, two research assistants, a biologist and a health technician.

- Factor V Leiden mutation analysis,
- Prothrombin 20120 mutation analysis,
- MTHFR gene polymorphism
- Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) mutation analysis
- Y chromosome microdeletion analysis
- SRY microdeletion analysis
- Cystic Fibrosis Mutation Analysis
- ACE gene polymorphism detection
- Chromosome and FISH analysis from peripheral blood
In addition, thesis and research studies continue in our department in cooperation with other departments of our faculty. Our department also takes part in routine hospital services and shares services with the Clinical Genetics outpatient clinic and various departments on the basis of consultation.
